I grew up on a farm not too far from where I live now. I loved being outside and interacting with nature. I have always enjoyed animals and the connection that we share with our natural surroundings. I can’t say that drawing was a passion of mine but have always loved the tactile sense of paint, paper, clay, fabric, and thread. I guess I’ve dabbled in a lot of different arts and craft mediums from crossstitch, quilting, crochet, clothing textiles, dyeing silks, clay sculpture and pottery, and paint.
Along with watercolours and Alcohol ink, I’m presently creating rope bowls from rope and fabric. The colours and textures are wonderful and creating the shapes and sizes is different with each bowl or basket!
Watercolour paintings fascinate me. The soft textures and sharp lines using vibrant colours or very light washes create beautiful texture or just a breath of detail. My journey is one of self discovery with little formal training. When I was in university taking my B.Ed. I majored in Art and loved those classes in Drawing and Textiles and Photography! One of my University pieces was even chosen back in 1986 to be in a Professors textbook. Called Metamorphic Progression, it was a pleasant surprise to be included in his book: Design Synectics. That piece has always been a bit of inspiration for me as it has a flaw in it that only I knew about! I agonized over whether to restart the assignment at the time but running short of time, I left it as it was. It was a lifelong lesson for me in living with imperfection. Art can sometimes be a bit happenstance even with best laid plans. It helps to ground me when trying to reproduce nature and its subtle imperfections, onto paint and paper! My journey is ongoing and I seem to change direction with watercolours as I explore different styles. Thank goodness beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
